After germination, the real journey begins. In part 2 of our growing series, we follow the plant through the vegetative and flowering phases – the two crucial stages on the way to harvest.
Vegetative Phase (Veg Stage)
During the vegetative phase, the plant grows in height and develops leaves. The light cycle is set to 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness. This is the right time for training methods like LST (Low Stress Training) or topping to shape the plant as desired.
Nutrients During Veg
In this phase, the plant primarily needs nitrogen (N). A good NPK fertilizer with a higher N ratio supports leaf growth. The pH of the water should be between 6.0 and 6.5.
Flowering Phase: Where the Buds Form
Switching to the 12/12 light cycle triggers flowering. After about 2 weeks, the first white hairs (pistils) appear at the nodes. From now on: ramp up phosphorus and potassium, reduce nitrogen.
Recognizing Harvest Time
The trichomes tell you when it’s time to harvest. Under a magnifying glass, you’ll see three stages:
- Clear/transparent: Too early
- Milky/cloudy: Peak THC content – ideal timing
- Amber: THC is degrading, more CBN – sedating effect
Drying and Curing
After harvest, the buds are hung upside down in a dark room at 18–22°C and 55–65% humidity to dry. After 7–14 days, curing begins in airtight jars. Only through curing do the full aroma and flavor develop.
