Barcelona, the unofficial cannabis capital of Europe. In episode 1 of the Spain series, we dive into the world of social clubs – hidden behind unassuming doors right in the city center.
Cannabis Social Clubs: What Are They?
A social club is neither a shop nor a coffeeshop. It’s a private association where members can consume cannabis together. Access by membership only, discreet, and legal in a gray area of Spanish law.
The First Visit
From the outside, you see nothing. No signs, no advertising. Just a buzzer and a camera. Inside: lounge atmosphere, music, a bar with drinks – and a counter with strains that put any dispensary to shame.
Barcelona: Why Here?
Barcelona has a long tradition of cannabis tolerance. Catalan legislation allows private consumption in enclosed spaces. From this, a unique club culture emerged – now over 200 registered clubs in the city.
The Strains
What’s offered here is dispensary quality. Local growers supply the clubs with fresh flower, often harvested just days ago. Prices range from 7 to 12 euros per gram. The selection: 10–20 strains, from classic Haze varieties to modern US genetics.
Atmosphere and Community
What makes social clubs special is the atmosphere. People of all ages and backgrounds meet here. No stigma, no side-eye – simply a place where cannabis is normal.
