Trichomes: The Crystals of the Plant
Trichomes are the small, mushroom-shaped glands on the surface of the buds. They contain everything: THC, CBD, terpenes – the entire spectrum of active compounds. Under magnification, they look like a forest of glass mushrooms – the denser, the more potent.
Reading the Colors
The color of the trichomes reveals the stage of maturity. Clear means unripe, milky-white indicates peak THC production, and amber signals degradation to CBN. Experienced growers harvest at the perfect window – when about 70% are milky and 30% are amber.
Terpenes: The Fingerprint of a Strain
Every strain has its own terpene profile. Myrcene for earthy, musky notes. Limonene for citrus. Linalool for lavender. Caryophyllene for pepper. The interplay of terpenes determines not just flavor, but also the effect.
Entourage Effect
Terpenes and cannabinoids work together – the so-called entourage effect. A strain with high THC but few terpenes hits differently than one with moderate THC and a rich terpene profile. That’s why the interplay matters more than the raw THC number.
